The Current Situation of Number Resources Management in the World, Asia and Japan.

Abstract

In order to operate the Internet smoothly, "resource" must be managed uniquely across national borders. These resources are divided into 3 categories: "Number Resources (IP address and AS number)", "Domain Name", and "protocol parameter". If these resources were to be distributed redundantly, the entire Internet would become chaotic. To prevent this, it is necessary to establish rules for accurate management and distribution methods, and to practice distribution in accordance with the rules.

In the first half of this session, we will share a systematic overview of how these critical resources are managed by which organizations. In addition, we will share the details of where and how the rules for the "Number Resource" of Japan (JPNIC) among the 3 resources are formulated, and how to participate in the rule-making process.

In the second half of this article, we will introduce the latest changes in the rules for "Number Resource" in Asia and Japan. This time, we will share the distribution of IPv4 addresses and AS numbers, and the latest trends in the "Improved accuracy of WHOIS registration" introduced at JANOG 43.

In this session, there were no catchy keywords and there was no talk of pursuing cutting-edge technology or operation, but I thought it was important to maintain the Internet, and I applied for it hoping to contribute even a little to the maintenance of the Internet.
