How collaborating to fight off increasing DDoS attacks can help us.

Abstract

With the frequency and the volume of DDoS attacks on an upward trend, their threat is increasing. Therefore we should ask ourselves whether the currently available countermeasures against DDoS attacks are at all sufficient. There is limited action a network that is being target can take to fight off attacks. For example, if we could defend a network by stopping the attack close to its original source, this would be quite effective to deal with DDoS attacks that fill out the network’s bandwidth. It is becoming unrealistic for the organizations to keep strengthening their defenses against DDoS attacks indefinitely. How could multiple organizations collaborate to fight off DDoS attacks? However, unconditional cooperation that is limited to putting up a request through email or telephone would mean that the time would increase until defenses are put up causing the damage by the DDoS attack to grow.

In order to solve these problems, for example, regarding IETF’s dots WG, common signaling for implementing the defense beyond the organization has been proposed.

However, we also need a common understanding of the DDoS attacks and countermeasures technique not only standardization. Unfortunately, in Japan, it cannot be said that those working in DDoS prevention are communicating enough between themselves. Moreover, it is possible that organizations that are being targeted by such attacks may not have the knowledge of the available methods to counter DDoS attacks and thus could not be taking the appropriate measures.

In this BoF, we will overcome organizational barriers to discuss the problems in common that are faced by those who work to prevent DDoS attacks, and debate on what can be done in terms of cooperation in order to deal with the increasing DDoS attacks.

This BoF focus on countermeasures in the case of a DDoS attack and not on measures to eliminate such attacks before they happen.
