Useful knowledge about Earthquakes: From data centers to the engineer’s home

Abstract

Since the Great East Japan Earthquake it has become common to spot advertisements of everything from data centers to apartment blocks promising earthquake resistance and promoting areas where earthquake do not occur as frequently. However what does the essential words for this discussion, such “earthquake occurrence probability” and “seismic zone coefficient”, actually mean?

In this session, from the point of view of seismology, we will provide information about earthquakes and disaster prevention in an accessible and practical manner. We hope this information will be of assistance when choosing a data center or a new home for an engineer.
