Mobile IPv6 behind-the-scenes and for the future
- Through the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications IPv6 Study Group

Abstract

In the U.S., Verizon, a major telecommunications company, is offering its services with IPv6, and content/service providers such as Google, Amazon are deploying IPv6. And recently, Apple Inc. has been requiring all apps in App Store to support IPv6-only networking.

In Japan, while IPv6 traffic was gradually increasing on landline of major providers, in September 2015, "study group on advanced internet usage with IPv6" (hereafter "IPv6 study group") was held by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications(MIC), where the status of IPv6 deployment on mobile networks was discussed.

In the IPv6 study group, three major mobile companies announced together that they would start IPv6 deployment on their mobile internet services from 2017, to promote the spread of IPv6. At the same time, mobile carriers and experts have been discussing about problems to be solved.

In this session, heading towards implementation of "the situation where users of smartphone sold after 2017 access IPv6 networks by default without being contious of it", we'd like to think about the future of IPv6 on mobile networks together with you, introducing discussion in IPv6 study group and its behind-the-scenes, the problems of IPv6 deployment on mobile networks, discussion among companies and efforts and problems found in their in-house projects.
