概要

Several mission-critical applications, such as AR/VR, remote surgery, and autonomous driving, have attracted a lot of attention.  To realize such applications on IP networks, ISPs need to forward the application packets appropriately to meet their SLA (e.g., latency, bandwidth). However, from the ISP’s point of view, such traffic control is very challenging because it is normally impossible to determine the type of applications and the communication quality requirements only from information of incoming IP packets.

Therefore, in recent years, academic and standardization activities have become very active to develop application-aware networking technologies and frameworks. In this presentation, I would like to share the current topics of application-aware networking. I will also share our research activities on application-aware networking using SRv6 as a data plane.

Finally, I hope this presentation will invoke the following discussion topics with JANOG members:
– What features would you like to have from a content provider’s perspective?
– What features would you like to have from a network operator’s perspective?
– Should we achieve application-awareness in the IP layer? Another layer approach?
– Possible on the Internet?
