Day3 2021年7月16日(金) 13:30～14:30(1時間00分)
With the diversification of Internet services, DNS is playing an increasing role as a general-purpose database to provide service information. As a result, new resource records are being defined and use cases are being added to existing resource records (especially TXT records). On the other hand, authoritative DNS server operators (zone administrators) in a typical organization are not experts in DNS protocol or new Internet services, and cannot be expected to understand and correctly configure all resource records. In addition, under the current circumstances, it is becoming more and more difficult for general organizations to operate their own authoritative DNS servers, as misconfiguration or a large number of external queries can cause service failures. With such changing circumstances, it is desirable to create a list of functions of representative authoritative DNS services provided in Japan and overseas, so that system management departments and service provision departments of organizations can operate appropriate authoritative DNS (own zone) in accordance with their respective purposes. DNSOPS.JP has been conducting a survey of authoritative DNS services since 2020 with the aim of creating such a list of functions (see note). In order to conduct a neutral survey, we have worked on the use of various authoritative DNS services head-on as a one-user, and in addition to the list of functions, we have prepared the first report in April 2021 based on our actual experience, which can be called a boot camp, including everything from the contract to the start of operation that field operators face. The detail of this survey was reported at the DNSOPS.JP event held on April 9, 2021, but with the aim of receiving feedback from a wider range of operators at JANOG and growing the list to be even better, we would like to introduce the outline of the survey, then discuss the DNS configuration items and the evaluation items at the time of service contract that JANOG participants are concerned about. Note: It is not the purpose of the survey or the reporting of results to rank features or recommend specific services.
