DNS is a fundamental service of the Internet, and in many cases, content service providers operate DNS authoritative servers, while ISPs and data centers operate DNS cache servers. So far, in terms of DNS redundancy, the main topic of discussion was the redundancy of DNS authoritative servers to the Internet, but redundancy within data centers is also inevitable.
In recent years, data centers have been increasingly adopting a network architecture known as CLOS, and LINE is also adopting the CLOS networks as standard architecture for newly constructed data centers. In the spring of 2021, LINE replaced its DNS cache servers and DNS authoritative servers. Previously, LINE utilized VRRP and load balancer for DNS redundancy within the data center. In this replacement, IP Anycast within the data center was adopted as the DNS redundancy method for both DNS cache servers and DNS authoritative servers.
By adopting IP Anycast as a DNS redundancy method within the data center, there are many advantages such as improved maintainability and ease of scaling. In this talk, I would like to introduce LINE’s design of the redundancy for DNS servers inside the data center and discuss the DNS redundancy method inside the data center.
