Two faces of the Future -Torn between the Telephony and the Internet-

Abstract

There is increasing interest and concern about unpredictable internet governance related issues, such as the government involvement on the Internet since the review of the ITR at WCIT in Dec 2012.

There are other issues such as:

  • Issues raised with ICANN's over 1,000 new gTLDs, which were not discussed during the considerations of the new gTLD program
  • Revelations of the government surveillance on the Internet

Under this environment the I* organisations have published Montevideo statement, and efforts have been started with 1net.org, to seek new directions in global internet co-operation.

This topic may sound like distant thunderstorms to most network operators and may not be pleasant to hear when there is no direct interest.

It is however very possible that apathy will not lead us to a bright future.
Being in the position if delivering the Internet, ignorance may become grudges in the future.
