Use of Virtual Routers

Abstract

Open source virtual routers such as Vyatta and Quagga are used for monitoring BGP routes, and as route reflectors. Now major router vendors are also starting to offer virtual router products and virtualisation platforms for laboratory networks, such as Cisco VIRL, Juniper Junosphere and so on.

For network operators day to day tasks, there are many things that don't require hardware routers. For example, designing routed networks, configuration testing, documentation, syslog/snmp testing, and coding scripts. More recently in network operations there is more direct relationship between applications and the network architecture, which makes debugging APIs and scripts more important to the operators.

This presentation will provide an introduction to recent network virtualisation developments and discuss reducing the operating cost by reviewing our current operations.
