RTBH filtering implementation on IX – Design on L2 network and operational issue –

Abstract

With increasing demand for DDoS attack measures also among IX users, JPNAP has launched RTBH filtering service in September 2022.

In order to realize this service, there are different restrictions and challenges in implementing the service from those in Layer 3 network such as ISPs and transit providers.

As an example of the difference, IX provider providing Layer 2 network cannot use static routing to null0, and RTBH filtering will not work unless the user’s routers accept routes for RTBH.

We first explain the design and specification of the service we have developed at JPNAP. Then we would like to discuss how the specification/implementation method should be or how the session participants want them to be, from the perspective of both IX users and service providers.
