Abstract
Mobile phone can connect to Internet via radio access, core network and ISP layers of mobile network.
NTT DOCOMO’s core network migrated from dedicated hardware to generic server like servers based on x86 architecture gradually, and 80% of our core network have been virtualized. The latest core network, 5GC, is fully virtualized and leverages container virtualization technology.
Thus, onboarding core network on public cloud is becoming easier than previous generation.
We NTT DOCOMO has been challenging Proof of Concept (PoC) trials to operate a 5G core network on the public cloud with the aim of realizing the flexible deployment and reliability of networks required in the 5G era.
In the trials, reduction of power consumption by using AWS Graviton and high-level carrier-grade redundancy design for a 5G core network hybrid-cloud environment leveraging AWS and DOCOMO’s on-premises network functions virtualization (NFV) infrastructure have been achieved, and obtained various knowledge related to them. (Press releases available: *1, *2)
In addition, NTT DOCOMO demonstrated not only 5GC on AWS, UPF on AWS Outposts, and automated end-to-end network slicing in Interop Tokyo 2023 ShowNet.
In this presentation, we will share the details of these trials and demonstration with the obtained knowledge. We’re pleased to have discussion about issues and problem-solving methods related to deploying NW equipment such as core networks in public clouds after the presentation.
