Efforts to deploy DDBR in carriers’ backbone networks

日本語版はこちら

Abstract

Carriers have already started to deploy white boxes in data centers and mobile cell sites. However, only AT&T in the world announced that they have deployed white boxes that are called DDC (Distributed Disaggregated Chassis) in their backbone networks. The existing router venders still dominate traditional chassis-based routers in carriers’ backbone networks. On the other hand, as the chair of Disaggregated Open Routers (DOR), a new sub-group in the Open Optical Packet Transport (OOPT) project in Telecom Infra Project (TIP) led by Meta established in March 2020, KDDI has been active in technical development of carrier-grade white box routers cooperating with carriers in North America and Europe.

In this presentation, we will clarify the technical specifications including SW/HW specifications and explain the DDBR (Distributed Disaggregated Backbone Router) architecture, which is a backbone router defined by TIP DOR. (*1,*2,*3)
Also, we will explain the issues for the traditional chassis-based routers in our production networks and will show the DDBR architecture is simpler and more efficient than the existing routers.
Furthermore, KDDI has already completed a commercial testing for DDBR as an Internet GW peering router (*4) and we are going to talk about how to deploy DDBR in our production networks.

Finally, we would like to discuss the DDBR architecture and the use cases for its deployment with JANOG.
