Network Operations (NetOps) Automation in Production: Further Enhancements, Expansions and Remaining Issues

Abstract

We reported about our automation of network firewall device settings last year at JANOG49, and as a follow-up, this we will report on our further systematical & operational improvements and enhancements along with remaining issues.

Our additional automations include:

[1] automation of arbitrary check command executions
[2] standardization and automation of config change testcases and its executions.

In the Q&A session, we would like to discuss the following, which we consider as future prospects and challenges:

– DR environment and upgrade operation of CI/CD automation platform
– maintenance and management of CI/CD pipeline execution environments
IaC of shared runners, CI/CD operation of runner itself
– confirming configuration validations
– configuration change automation of non-firewall devices using API
-automation tools other than Gitlab CI + Ansible
