Abustract

The JANOG49’s local venue network, such as wired LAN for streaming, and wireless LAN for visitors, was built by the “JANOG49 Network Team” consisting mainly of youth and students from QUNOG.

We will share how we built the network in this large venue with a lot of rooms, backbone network design, the challenges of the members who are not used to building a network, and how we solved the difficulties from the perspective of the not-used-to members.

In addition, we will share why QUNOG (a local network community based in Kyushu), decided to build the JANOG local venue network, the purpose and effect of organizing mainly young people and students, how the experienced engineers helped and supported the work, and the real voices from the design stage to the deployment.

On the presentation, we would like to report on the actual network traffic, and discuss the know-how of built an event network, which tends to be affected by the physical constraints and operational rules of the building, how to manage an event network, how to make “network technology” more attractive to youth and students, and we would like to deepen the discussion on what is necessary for the sustainable development of local networking technical communities.

If a major network-related outage happened during JANOG49 (we don’t hope but), this program will be partially changed to include “case studies of the outage” and “apology press conference”.
