Abstract
This program is a 400Gbps version of the “High Speed DCI Series” presented at JANOG.
We have reported that high-speed optical transmission, especially for data center site-to-site (DCI) communications, is a challenge that can be overcome, although there are some difficulties. In JANOG43, we discussed how the cost of modules, which had been a major issue in optical transmission, was solved by introducing modules based on MSA. Then, in JANOG44, we solved the issue of DCI at 10 Gbps, and in JANOG45, we approached the issue of DCI at 100 Gbps.
So what are the challenges of optical transmission at 400Gbps?
Verification and commercialization using 400Gbps Ethernet has already begun at telecommunications carriers, large-scale content providers, and other companies. However, the cost of 400 Gbps optical transmission is clearly the biggest bottleneck, as the equipment and modules themselves, including measurement equipment and switches, are still very expensive. Overcoming this challenge will not be easy.
Are we just watching the giant players with our fingers crossed? Is there no challenge for us?
After asking ourselves the same question, we have decided to start a challenge about 400Gbps, with an eye to the future.
We will share our challenge with you, JANOGers, and ask, “What needs to change?” We would like to share and discuss the following.
