Abstract

From 2017 to 2018, the manga piracy site “Manga-mura” became a social issue. It is said to have attracted 100 million page visitors per month at its peak. In response to this, the “Conference on Countermeasures against Piracy on the Internet” was held, and many of you may remember that site blocking became a major topic of discussion. Since then, a cooperative relationship between publishing companies and telecommunications has been established, and measures have been taken from many angles. However, the damage is even more serious than before, as the total number of visits collected by manga piracy sites reached 400 million per month in November 2021.

In this session, we will first review the overall movement of piracy sites and countermeasures since 2018. Then, we will discuss the results of an inspection of manga piracy sites, which revealed the possibility that they are making good use of CDNs by devising their front ends. We hope to exchange opinions with operators in the audience based on the estimation of front-end features and infrastructure configuration through technical investigation.

The theme of JANOG50 is Change. We would like to discuss opinions on new countermeasures other than blocking that we can propose as engineers, and would like to “change” the current situation where pirate sites nest.
